Richard has been involved within the sport of Triathlon for over 30 years; he spent 10 years himself as a professional athlete, winning five national titles and a world championship team gold.

Triathlon and sport hugely enhanced my life, opening many doors and offering many life experiences. It has strengthened my values and enriched my life. These values revolve around always staying positive and optimistic and enjoy life today.”

This camp, is aimed at getting in some early winter aerobic base miles.  Each day there is the plan to swim, bike and run, the distances for each discipline will vary, but generally the volume will increase over the week.. Richard will also be available to help with any aspect of triathlon and triathlon training you would like to learn about. The nature of this time of year and this type of training means it can be very social and interactive. Throughout the camp there will be, stops at the best cafes and cake shops so we can all enjoy local treats and coffees.

What should people expect to get out of Winter Base Camp?

This winter base camp is a new camp, with an aim to get people together and to kick start the year with some good weather and relaxed winter base mile in all three disciplines.

For many it will give them the motivation they need to help them through the difficult winter months and prepare them for any big races or challenges in the year.

What are the benefits of winter training?

The benefits of winter training are really simple: going to a place at a key time of the year and being able to train well, consistently and hard with little distraction.

So for me the key things are:

  • Easy to get too
  • Great weather
  • No time difference
  • No need to travel to any session as everything is on your doorstep, so this means there’s no time wasted
  • When not training, it is easy to relax and recover
  • Great facilities
  • Endless choices for runs and bike rides. On road or off road, rolling terrain or hilly, challenging and stunning!

Why do you like using Lanzarote and in particular why do use Club La Santa for your Camps?

The reason I use Club La Santa is simply because I love it! It has everything that I mention above and  everything you need to make a perfect training camp. I honestly do not think there is a better place in the world.

What improvements can people expect to take from your camp?

I think the short term benefits will be just that they get to do some great training and in an environment that will give so much motivation. Once they recover from the training camp, athletes should see a marked improvement in fitness.

Longer term they will take away with them new knowledge and understanding of training and technical aspects that will help them for years to come. Along the way they will meet like minded people and make some great new friendships.

What are you looking forward to most about the camp?

To spend time at my favourite place in the world (Cub La Santa), spending time with like minded people, having some warmth to train in! Just escaping the winter weather from home and the over indulging of Christmas.
