Robin Brews has for years been welcoming a wide range of Club la Santa guests to his warm weather triathlon camps, family triathlon camps and swim camps.
We managed to find some time in his busy schedule to find out a little more about the Family Swim Camp.
So Robin, what’s your experience and how long have you been working with Club La Santa?
For me, Club La Santa has become my second home.
I first visited the complex as a world-class athlete, training for both International swimming and International Triathlon competitions in the nineties. Without a doubt, it was and still is the place to visit for periods of warm weather and focused training. As a professional athlete, coach or course member, there is so much in one convenient place: accommodation right beside world-class facilities which need to be seen to be believed, including three 50m pools; great catering options with the Atlantico buffet restaurant providing an endless supply of healthy dishes at very convenient times; other great restaurants too both on and off-site; and finally some of the best cycling and running training grounds in the world.
All this combined with a positive and friendly vibe makes for a very special environment and the atmosphere at Club La Santa uplifting.
Falling in love with Lanzarote and Club La Santa was easy. The resort is unique with lots of like-minded people all in one place either enjoying a huge variety of physical activity or simply lounging by the pools. The added value from a visit is that you always return home in a better physical and mental condition place than when you left
I have been privileged, with the support of Club La Santa and also my very special friend Kenneth Gasque (who was the original Director of Sport) to develop a range of coaching courses to help people fast track their skills in Triathlon and Swimming for many years. Robin Brew Sports has literally helped thousands of individuals at all levels of ability, who have enjoyed being trained by talented and highly experienced world-class coaches. Our inclusive and friendly ethos along with a caring approach that all course members get the very best out of their valuable time with us are just a few of the things that set us apart.
How long have the family swim camps been going? Were you involved with the first one? If so, how did the idea come about?
Our Family Swim Camp has been running for the last 10 years. The idea came about when I was coaching swimmers and helping them with their technique on their summer holidays and at the same time parents were enjoying a little bit of swim coaching too.
It made sense to provide an opportunity to bring families together and have a week of swimming training and coaching fun where parents could swim alongside their children at their own pace, but still very much part of the structured session.
What do you enjoy about these camps and what’s your favorite session?
One of my most enjoyable sessions each year is the ‘Mystery Set’ midway through the camp. The session includes a combination of swimming, running and simple exercises in lots of combinations as part of a team of 3. If anyone has ever been to the 50m Pool when this is on, it is an amazing spectacle. It is a full-on session where teams are trying to hit their personal targets set by your truly for the honor of winning the Mystery Set. The coaching week ends with a Family Swim Gala where the Swim Stars (under 12’s) take on the Swim Gods (12-17 years) and the Swim Legends (18 years to…very old). This is great fun and brings out an interesting dynamic of competitive drive among the parents (Swim Legends).
What’s the feedback? Why do you feel the camp is a success?
The people attending the camps are what keep us going. They are just brilliant. The feedback each year is really positive and the camps and courses allow people to meet and get to know each other.
Many lifelong friendships have been formed and I am not sure if we should be setting up a dating agency, as we have had over 11 couples who have met on the camps and then gone on to get married. The most famous of them being Chrissie Wellington!
