Volcano Ridge Run 13k.
Posted: Tuesday April 8, 2008
It was a hot, sunny morning already when the athletes were gathering together in the stadium of Club La Santa. People were still signing up at 9.30, half an hour before the race to run the 13 km. through the beautiful, but tough landscape of Lanzarote. Especially on the ridge a lot of the athletes were struggling to get to the top and that was approximately on the half of the race. 91 participants signed up and only 5 didn’t manage to finish. At 9.45 Joanne, our Entertainment Manager, did a warm-up with the athletes to make them ready and stretched for the start at 10.00!

The male leading the race at the point they reached the ridge, Brian Dåsbjærg from Denmark, managed to be in front until the finish line and won with a time of 00:45:23. After Brian finished, Cesar Hervada from Spain finished with a time of 00:47:30 and not far behind came Jonas Pløger from Denmark with a time of 00:47:40.
Among the female runners there was a British stage of honor.
The female winner, Shona Crombie-Hicks, managed to lead the race too until the finish line and finished with a time of 00:49:51. Second became Greenteamer Susannah Evans with a time of 00:56:18 and the third lady was Debbie Jones with 00:59:17.
José Carlos Hernandez, the best runner of Lanzarote was at the stadium too, but not to run this time. Kenneth Gasque, our Event Race Manager spoke to him quickly. José told us that he is going to Holland next week to run the Marathon of Rotterdam. There he is going to try to qualify for the National Team of Spain.

Brian Dåsbjærg is here on training camp with the Military Pentathlon team of Denmark. After the race I asked him how the race went: “I feel good and prepared for the season coming up for the Military Pentathlon. Running is one of the 5 disciplines. Cesar stayed with me until 3 km. I made a slide increase and he let go right away. Up hill I could feel I was increasing and that I had energy left. It was a great race.”
Shona Crombie-Hicks felt good too after the race. “I usually do marathons. I’ve been living here in La Santa for 4 months now and we came here on holiday for 12 years before. Usually we’re going back home in the summer and come back here in October. During the race I kept the same pace all the time. There were not many clouds, so it was quite warm, but at least there was no Calima.”

All in all it was a very nice morning here at Club La Santa and a successful Volcano Ridge Run!
