Viva La Santa - Tina Baker

Posted: Wednesday June 23, 2010

Anyone interested in fitness has GOT to go to La Santa. If you’re passionate about sport or fitness, like I am, you’ve really, REALLY GOT to go, writes Tina Bakker, following her first Fit Camp this June.

I mean it. If I had my way it would be the law! It’s the most inspiring place I’ve been to.

OK, I admit it – my head might have been turned, watching super-fit guys walking round in shorts. (What joy!) Some of them were contestants from the Iron Man Triathlon, which took place the week before I turned up. The men and scores of women who take part in this extreme test of willpower and physical stamina are truly amazing. La Santa’s event is the toughest in the world.

But, apart from the super-buff, La Santa’s also full of families enjoying the stunning array of fitness facilities. Aerobics, tennis, swimming, dance, boxing, running, biking… all free. Working out with so many like-minded people in the glorious sun (plus, thankfully, a cooling breeze) encourages you to try loads of new things. I had a go at hip-hop and ballroom classes and did some rather raunchy things with my bottom in soca step! Fab fun for everyone.

My own Fit Camp was aimed at beginners, those who wanted to lose weight and anyone getting back into a fitness regime. But the easy-going atmosphere on the complex meant anyone could come along. My youngest participant was only 13 months old! I had yummy mummies, 60-year-olds, sportsmen, and holidaymakers who’d never done a keep fit class before. We all had a laugh, burnt calories and toned up.

I also took advantage of a little head-space, which blossoms away from the usual routine, to set some new goals for myself. My aim was also to encourage participants to do the same. After classes, we stretched, relaxed and visualised a better body and more balanced lifestyle.

This was my first trip to La Santa, but it won’t be my last. I’ve been invited back to do a second Fit Camp next June. And I’m dragging the hubby along with me. He needs it. (He went feral while I was away this time. I found 12 pizza boxes in the recycling bin, cases of beer bottle empties & a telltale air-freshener in the living room attempting to mask the smell of the cigarettes he’d sneaked!!!)

So join me next June – have a great holiday and build a better body while you’re at it.
