Lanzarote wine tasting evenings

Every Tuesday evening at 4.30pm guests are invited to take part in a wine tasting in the Sports Cafe to learn about some of our regional wines and (of course) taste them! Lanzarote has 6 main vineyards.

We went down to meet some of the 35 or so people who were taking part in this week’s tasting. The featured wine was El Grifo and we also had a guest speaker, Alena Polanoka from the Canary Island Government. She was on hand to explain how we’re able to grow grapes in what appears to be a barren, volcanic environment:

“Many people don’t realise that this kind of wine production takes place on the island. At the moment 35% is exported to Spain and other parts of Europe, so I think it is important to make people aware of it”.

Janne Nielsen from Denmark said: “I got more out of it than I had expected. She was very thorough when explaining about the grape and the wine districts. I think the wines were lovely so I might be buying a bottle or two”.

Phillip and Pat Owen from England had also enjoyed their time at the wine tasting: “It was very good. It was very interesting to learn about the history behind the wines. We have been coming here for 25 years and have been to wine tastings on the island before and we do enjoy it. It is lovely, lovely wine”.

At each tasting there are 3 different wines, usually a dry Malvasia white wine, then a rose or red wine and a Moscatel (sweet wine) to finish. As only 2 of the vineyards do red wine, the others will bring a semi-sweet one.
