Lanzarote Wine Run 2010
Posted: Wednesday June 23, 2010
Well we thought the first Wine Run was big, but this year we had double the amount of participants.
Some took part in the half marathon and others opted for the new 11km walk.
Before the start, there was a minute’s silence to honour José Saramago who passed away last Friday on the island of Lanzarote.
The race itself was a great mix of breathtaking landscapes and top local wines, which were offered by a dozen bodegas at the aid stations along the way.
As well as something to drink, there was local food including goat’s cheese, potatoes with “mojo” sauce and “tollo” (dried fish).
The overall winners, both from Lanzarote, were Nicholas Ward Muñoz and Aroa Merino Betancor and they received the best prize in sport – their weight in wine!
Nico finished in 01:16:06 and got 77 litres of wine, with the D.O.C. Lanzarote denomination label. Aroa needed 01:22:13 to finish and got 42 litres of wine.
Second and third were Víctor Guadalupe (1:17:42) and Henrik Jorgensen (1:18:33) in the men’s race, and Maja Stage Nielsen (1:29:49) and Celia Romero (1:30:32) in the women’s race. All age group winners also received a trophy and prize.
It’s also worth noting that there was a political flavour this year as many local politicians took part in the 11km walk… And special mention should go to the Cabildo president who opted to run!
