Bert Jammaer and Bella Bayliss won their second Lanzarote Ironman titles in a row at the weekend.
1241 athletes took part in the race, which started in Puerto del Carmen, bright and early on Saturday morning.
The thousands of spectators saw them set off from the beach and dive into the calm waters of the Atlantic.
First out of the water was Brit Stephen Bayliss (00:50:13), followed by Scott Neyedli, Bert Jammaer and Stephan Vuckovic. Lanzarote born athlete and local favourite Gregorio Cáceres finished the 3.8 km swim in eighth place (00:54:41).
Heading to the bikes, Belgian Jammaer took the lead, followed by Estonia’s Ain Alar Juhanson, who was determined to win the race again after last year’s 3rd place.
Indeed at the end of the cycling course, he was in the lead.

It didn’t last long though with Jammaer and Kai Hundertmarck, a former German Telecom cyclist overtaking him on the run. It was the highlight of Kai’s race as he’d dropped back to 52nd by the finish.
It wasn’t the same story for Jammear who took the lead and stayed there.
The punishing nature of the competition showed as he hit the finish line and collapsed through exhaustion. Fortunately the medics were on hand to help out.
Afterwards he told us that the race completely drained him and he was at one point even considering whether he would ever run another triathlon.
However, reality hit and he became more concerned about being fit enough to dance at his wedding on Friday (congratulations…!).
Coming in second was Stephan Vuckovic, a full three minutes after Jammaer, he was followed by Olaf Sabatschus.
Women’s Race
In the women’s race, Bella Bayliss won her second Ironman Lanzarote title in a row, thanks mainly to her run.
Her times were: 56:00 for the swim, 5:46:37 on the bike, and 3:04:06 for the marathon, her total time being 9:54:58.
The race for second was extremely tight and it was only in the last few kilometres that a winner was confirmed. Rachel Joyce was just seconds ahead of Michaela Giger.
German Kathryn Paetzold came in fourth and Hillary Biscay managed the second best time on the marathon course and a fifth place overall.
